Why fake-capacity SSD listings can appear convincing
A computer can be made to report a false storage capacity when the device controller or firmware misrepresents the underlying media. The drive may appear to format normally and accept small files. Problems become visible only after enough data is written to exceed the real capacity, at which point files can become corrupted, disappear or overwrite earlier data.
Packaging, product images and familiar interface terms are not sufficient proof. A listing may use phrases such as “high-speed SSD” while the hardware is closer to a flash drive or memory card. An extremely low price for a large claimed capacity is one of the clearest reasons to investigate. Genuine promotions occur, but storage has a market cost.
