A 4TB SAS drive is most compelling when you need a like-for-like replacement, a smaller mirrored pool or a low-cost enterprise test system. It is rarely the best density choice for a new large array, so price per TB matters. Below you can compare current 4TB enterprise SAS HDDs, same-capacity SATA alternatives, and the HBA or cabling hardware you may need to use the drive correctly.
4TB SAS remains useful for existing servers and smaller arrays, but compare its price per TB against 8TB and larger drives before filling valuable bays.

What should you compare before buying?
| Option | Best fit | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| 4TB Seagate Exos SAS | High-capacity server and array use | Verify exact SAS part number |
| 4TB WD Ultrastar SAS | Enterprise storage and dense arrays | Verify SAS model and sector format |
| 4TB Toshiba MG SAS | Enterprise capacity alternative | Verify MG SAS part number |
| 4TB enterprise SATA | Lower controller complexity | Not a SAS replacement when SAS features are required |

SAS hard drive buying guide
Is a 4TB SAS hard drive the right size?
How to compare 4TB SAS prices
Compare only clearly identified 4TB SAS HDDs at the same condition. Divide the current drive price by 4 to get a simple price-per-TB figure, then compare that with the neighboring capacity pages.
For an array, multiply the drive price by the planned drive count and divide by usable capacity after redundancy. That exposes cases where a slightly larger drive reduces bay and controller requirements enough to justify the higher unit price.
What to check before installing a 4TB SAS drive
Confirm the HBA or RAID controller supports the drive, and match the cable to the controller connector. A SAS drive cannot be made compatible with a SATA-only motherboard port through a passive adapter.
For replacements, check the existing array sector format, tray or caddy, firmware expectations and actual usable capacity. Enterprise labels can look similar even when the interface or format differs.
When a SATA alternative makes more sense
A same-capacity enterprise SATA drive can be a sensible alternative in a server that does not require dual-port SAS and already has SATA connectivity.
Keep SATA alternatives separate from the SAS results so the cheaper interface is not mistaken for a like-for-like SAS replacement.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good price for a 4TB SAS hard drive?
Use the current price per TB rather than a fixed threshold. Divide the live price by 4 and compare it with neighboring capacities and the same-capacity SATA alternatives.
Can I use a 4TB SAS drive in a normal desktop?
Yes only with a compatible SAS HBA or controller and the correct cable. A standard SATA motherboard port cannot directly run a SAS drive.
Should I buy 4TB SAS or SATA?
Choose SAS when your server, backplane or storage design requires SAS features. Choose SATA when the system supports it and lower cost or simpler connectivity is more important.
Do all 4TB enterprise drives use the same sector format?
No. Check the exact listing and model documentation for 512e, 4Kn or other enterprise formatting before adding it to an existing array.
