# ST1000DM010 vs ST1000DM014: CMR, SMR, Speed and Buying Guide

The older ST1000DM010 and current ST1000DM014 share 1TB capacity, 3.5-inch SATA and 7,200 RPM, but their recording methods and marketplace risks are different.

## Quick answer

Choose by workload and condition. DM010 is CMR and better suited to repeated sustained rewriting when the unit is healthy. DM014 is SMR, newer and commonly easier to buy new, making it suitable for light desktop storage and mostly-read data. A used DM010 is not automatically better than a new DM014.

## Buying guide

### The similarities can mislead buyers

Both drives are 1TB, 3.5-inch SATA and 7,200 RPM. A generic retailer comparison may therefore emphasize only cache and speed. The deeper difference is how data is written and how the products enter today’s market. DM010 is older CMR inventory; DM014 is the current SMR platform.

### CMR versus SMR

DM010 writes conventional non-overlapped tracks. DM014 uses shingled recording and firmware-managed reorganization. For read-heavy storage and small bursts, the user may notice little difference. For sustained repeated rewrites, DM010’s CMR design is more predictable.

### 64MB versus 256MB cache

DM014 has four times the listed cache, which can absorb bursts and help firmware manage writes. Cache capacity is not a direct measure of total drive quality and cannot transform SMR into CMR. DM010’s smaller cache does not prevent it from handling long conventional writes more consistently.

### Rated transfer speed

DM014 carries a slightly higher rated maximum sustained figure. That does not mean every real workload is faster. Seek patterns, file size, disk fill, cache state and SMR background work matter. Compare the workload rather than ranking the drives by one maximum number.

### Age and condition are part of the specification

A new DM014 with verified warranty is a different risk from a used DM010 with unknown hours. The CMR benefit should not erase mechanical age, handling, previous temperature or SMART history. Condition is not a minor shopping filter; it is part of the purchase decision.

### Gaming comparison

For a secondary game library, both can work, but SSD storage is preferable for frequently played and modern streaming-heavy games. If prices are close, choose the healthier, better-supported drive rather than chasing CMR for a mostly-read game archive.

### Backup comparison

DM010’s CMR can be attractive for large recurring backup sets, but only when the unit is healthy and the price is justified. DM014 can store backups with moderate change rates. Neither should be the sole copy, and neither is immune to ransomware, theft or controller failure.

### NAS and RAID comparison

Neither model is the best default for an important NAS array. DM014’s SMR makes parity rebuilds and sustained array writes unattractive. DM010 is CMR, but it remains an older desktop drive without the positioning and warranty of a current NAS family.

### Boot-drive comparison

Do not make this comparison the centre of a boot-drive decision. A SATA SSD offers much lower latency, faster updates and better application responsiveness. The HDDs are most defensible as secondary capacity.

### Price thresholds

A DM010 should be discounted enough to compensate for older inventory and uncertain support. A DM014 should be compared with a 1TB SSD and 2TB HDD. If a SATA SSD is only modestly more expensive, it often provides the better system upgrade. If a 2TB HDD costs only slightly more, it provides better capacity value.

### A practical verdict

Choose DM010 for repeated rewriting only when it is verified healthy, has credible warranty or return rights, and is priced appropriately. Choose DM014 for new light-duty desktop storage when the SMR limits are acceptable. Choose an SSD for boot and active applications, or a NAS drive for array duty.

### How to avoid listing errors

The Amazon listings requires the exact model in the title or Amazon model field and rejects conflicting capacity or form-factor signals. It also stores condition separately, so a cheap used DM010 cannot silently outrank a new DM014 without the buyer seeing the difference.
