# Seagate BarraCuda 4TB Buying Guide: ST4000DM004 Price, SMR and Best Use

Canonical: https://cloudzat.com/seagate-barracuda-4tb/

Purpose: shopper-first buying guide.

Decision: ST4000DM004 is best for general desktop storage, media, game archives and moderate backups. It is SMR with a 55TB-per-year workload rating. Choose a documented CMR alternative for frequent sustained rewriting, parity RAID or workloads where long write slowdowns are unacceptable.

- Good fit for: Desktop bulk storage — Game libraries, media, ordinary backups and mostly-read data are the clearest uses.
- Think twice for: Repeated large rewrites — SMR can become less predictable during long write-heavy sessions, especially as the drive fills.
- Compare against: 4TB CMR alternatives — If the price gap is small and write behavior matters, a documented CMR drive can be the better purchase.
