Storage planning fails when today’s dataset is copied directly into a drive-size decision. A home server also needs room for growth, snapshots, filesystem overhead, parity or mirroring, and a separate backup. This calculator estimates those layers and proposes a practical drive count and capacity.

## Redundancy is not a backup

Mirroring and parity can keep a system online after a drive failure, but they do not protect against deletion, corruption, theft, fire or malware. Important data should also exist on another device or in another location.

## Leave room for rebuilds and performance

Storage arrays work better when they are not completely full. Rebuilds, snapshots and metadata also need space. The calculator adds headroom rather than recommending a layout that is full on the day it is installed.

## Use fewer large drives or more small drives carefully

Fewer drives generally reduce power and noise. More drives can increase aggregate performance and provide flexible parity layouts, but they require more bays, ports and replacement planning.
