# Home Server Power Cost Calculator

A server that runs continuously spends most of its time near idle, not at maximum load. A useful power estimate therefore weights idle consumption and active consumption by the number of hours spent in each state. This calculator shows energy use and operating cost without displaying a result until the calculation button is pressed.

## Calculate operating cost

Use measured wall power where available. The result remains hidden until Calculate is clicked.

## Measure at the wall when possible

Manufacturer power ratings describe maximum adapter capacity rather than typical consumption. A plug-in energy meter provides a better estimate after the server has completed startup, indexing and storage maintenance.

## Include drives and network equipment

Hard drives, external enclosures, switches and a UPS all consume power. Calculate them separately or include their measured consumption in the idle and load values.

## Compare purchase price with operating cost

An efficient system can recover a higher purchase price over several years, particularly where electricity rates are high. The five-year figure makes that trade-off easier to see.

## Frequently asked questions

How many hours should I use for load time?

Use the approximate daily period when the server performs backups, transcodes, virtual-machine workloads or other intensive tasks. The remaining hours are treated as idle.

Does a UPS increase electricity use?

Yes. UPS conversion and battery-maintenance losses add overhead. The amount varies by design and load level.

Should sleep time be entered as idle?

Use the actual sleep-state power if the server reliably sleeps. Otherwise use the normal idle measurement.
